Amazonius burgessi – Small species with great observation value
Amazonius burgessi is a rather rarely kept dwarf tarantula from South Americaoriginally from regions like Guyana originates. Compared to many known species, it remains significantly smaller and is therefore particularly suitable for more compact terrariums.
The animals reach a body length of about 3 to 4 cm and thus belong to the smaller tarantulas. Their coloration is mostly inconspicuous brown to darkwhich means that it camouflages itself excellently in the substrate. However, it is precisely this understated appearance that makes it a very natural and authentic terrarium species.
Amazonius burgessi lives predominantly bottom dwelling and shows a rather hidden behavior. The animals like to create small retreats in the substrate or use existing hiding places under bark or roots.
Suitable for keeping is a Terrarium from about 20 × 20 × 20 cm. Larger tanks are of course possible, but the animals also feel at home in smaller, well-structured terrariums. Important is a sufficient substrate height of about 5 to 10 cmso that the spider can dig.
A suitable substrate is loose, burrowable substrate such as forest humus or our special tarantula substrate. In addition, a cork bark or a small hiding place which the spider will gladly accept.
Temperatures can vary between 22 and 26 °C lie. At the same time, the species prefers a Slightly increased humidity of around 60-75 %. A slightly damp area in the terrarium is sufficient, while the rest of the terrarium can remain somewhat drier.
Suitable food is smaller feeder insects such as crickets, small cockroaches or fruit flies in young animals. The spider exhibits calm but effective hunting behavior.
Due to their compact sizetheir natural behavior and their easy keeping is Amazonius burgessi is an interesting species for terrarium keepers who want to keep smaller tarantulas and value a near-natural setup.
