Terrarium plants

Terrarium Plants Are More Than Just Decorative Accents

Terrarium plants provide vital climate functions that are difficult to replicate without real vegetation. Through water evaporation via their leaves, they continuously increase the humidity within the terrarium — creating a more natural and comfortable environment for your animals.

Additionally, plants help prevent waterlogging by absorbing moisture from the substrate through their roots. Ground-cover plants help maintain a more stable humidity level by reducing evaporation from the soil surface.

Beyond their functional benefits, terrarium plants also visually recreate the animals’ natural habitat. They offer hiding places and encourage species-typical behavior, which supports your animals’ well-being — and makes it easier and more exciting for you to observe them in a natural setting.

Pesticides in Terrarium Plants

Plants from typical garden centers are often treated with pesticides, which can pose a danger to terrarium animals. While these plants may be fine for living rooms or gardens, they are not suitable for long-term use in animal enclosures. Even rinsing or repotting them doesn’t completely remove harmful residues.

Our terrarium plants are completely free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, making them safe to plant directly in your terrarium — a simple solution that also protects your animals’ health.

What to Consider When Using Live Plants in Terrariums

Most terrarium plants prefer soft, low-lime water. That’s why we recommend watering and misting with rainwater or soft mineral water. Alternatively, you can mix distilled water with tap water (1:1) to reduce mineral content. This keeps your plants healthy and reduces unsightly lime stains on the terrarium glass.

Lighting is also essential for optimal plant growth. Besides choosing the right intensity, the balance of red and blue light plays a crucial role. You’ll find spectrum details listed in each of our product descriptions.

And here’s a great bonus: terrarium plants don’t need fertilizer. They’re naturally nourished by your animals’ waste and the droppings of decomposer species in the substrate.
