Short description:
With a body size of up to ten centimeters, Lasiodora parahybana is one of the largest spiders in the world. It reaches leg spans of up to 30 cm. The spider has a shaggy appearance with longer and dense hairs. The coloration varies greatly in this tarantula. Shortly after molting, the base coloration is a reddish brown as seen in the photo. After a few weeks, however, it changes color strongly and it becomes darker and darker in its coloring. Therefore one must not be surprised if one sees a completely different spider in the terrarium after a moult.
The ground dwelling Lasiodora parahybana lives in burrows or hides under roots, bark pieces, stones or leaves. In colder months and during molting and brood care, it retreats into its burrows, which it lines with spider silk for protection. One should not be deceived by the country of origin and play with the idea of setting up a tropical terrarium for her. In Brazil it inhabits the eastern part and is found there in dry forests and steppes. Therefore, a humidity of 60 to 70% is perfectly sufficient. As with every tarantula, a water bowl for water intake must not be missing.
The terrarium for an adult animal should have the dimensions 60 × 40 × 40 cm. The substrate height should be 20 cm, so it can dig a nice burrow and live out its natural behavior. The behavior of Lasiodora parahybana can be classified as calm. She rather retreats in case of a disturbance than she would go into attack mode. Nevertheless, one should be careful in dealing with her, but that goes without saying.
