Peppered cockroaches are impressive animals, not only because of their body size. In case of danger, they emit a defensive secretion smelling of pepper, which justifies their name. Adults live for 2 more years after the mature moult, which is a rarity for cockroaches.
The substrate plays a crucial role in this species. The nymphs bury themselves in it until maturity moulting and feed mainly on white rotten wood and foliage. Breeding Archimandrita tesselata “Peppered Cockroach” is uncomplicated. However, the development period takes a relatively long time and therefore they are only suitable as food animals to a limited extent.
Once a week you can offer the animals vegetables and fruit. It is best to simply place the food on the substrate. This also gives the nymphs the opportunity to help themselves. The substrate should never dry out completely. Therefore, it is best to spray the substrate vigorously every week. A humidity of 60 % is sufficient for this species.
