Psalmopoeus cambridgei – The nimble hunter from Trinidad

Psalmopoeus cambridgeialso known as the “Trinidad Chevron tarantula”, is one of the most beautiful and fascinating tree tarantulas around. Their basic coloration ranges from light brown to a shimmering metallic grey-green. A fine dark longitudinal stripe can be seen on the abdomen. Particularly striking are the orange-brown stripes on the tarsi, which are clearly visible when they move.

This species originally comes from the Caribbean island of Trinidad, which lies just a few kilometers off the coast of Venezuela. The tropical climate there, with daytime temperatures of around 30 °C and night-time temperatures dropping to around 20 °C, provides ideal conditions for Psalmopoeus cambridgei . Humidity is usually around 75% and increases significantly during the rainy season (June to October).

This climate can be easily recreated in the terrarium. The animals feel comfortable at a temperature of around 24-28 °C during the day and lowered to around 20 °C at night. If you keep them at room temperature, this can also be done without any problems – the development time is then simply extended. A humidity level of around 70-75% can be easily achieved by regular, targeted spraying. Of course, a water dish is essential.

Psalmopoeus cambridgei is considered suitable for beginners among the tree-dwelling tarantulas, but still demands respect in handling. This is because it is very fast, eager to jump and often curious. When caring for them – for example when changing the water – you should always work during the day, when the animal is usually resting in its self-made web. At night, however, the spider is often seen in a hunting position – usually sitting on the web of tubes, ready to strike.

Their hunting behavior is impressive. As soon as an insect approaches, it is grabbed at lightning speed. It does not hesitate for long, but snaps straight away. Due to their active nature, it is important to use an escape-proof terrarium or a secure box – because Psalmopoeus cambridgei tries to explore her surroundings.

Even though it has no stinging hairs, like many species of the genus, it can defend itself by escaping or jumping at lightning speed. However, with good observation and calm handling, it remains an exciting, attractive terrarium animal – perfect for anyone with some experience or who is prepared to get involved with a nimble but beautiful species.
