Pamphobeteus spec. “Mascara” – Large, massive and fascinating

Pamphobeteus spec. “Mascara” is one of the tarantulas that make an impression through their appearance alone. The animals look massive, strong and at the same time surprisingly elegant.

Adult females in particular develop an enormous physique and show the typical presence of large South American tarantulas. At the same time, many animals have fine color reflections on their legs and abdomen, which can appear differently depending on the light.

But it’s not just their size that makes this species special. Their behavior also often appears much calmer and more controlled than that of many hectic species. This creates a fascinating mixture of strength and composure.

Behavior and special features

Pamphobeteus spec. “Mascara” is mainly crepuscular and nocturnal. During the day, the animals often sit quietly in their hiding place or in front of their cave, while at night they become more active and explore the terrarium.

The hunting behavior is particularly exciting. The animals react with lightning speed to movements and display the typical power of large Pamphobeteus species. At the same time, they often appear surprisingly calm when not feeding.

Many animals also like to dig and actively rearrange their terrarium. Larger females in particular regularly move substrate or expand existing hiding places.

Terrarium size and set-up

For adult animals we recommend a terrarium from 30 × 30 × 30 cmlarger tanks offer significantly more opportunities for structure and behavior. Particularly suitable:

  • Tarantula & scorpion terrarium complete set
  • Repto Terra Sky
  • Hobby Terra Fix & Easy

The furnishings should look as natural and calm as possible. The following have proved particularly successful:

  • Tarantula substrate as a burrowable substrate
  • Cork tubes or pieces of cork
  • Insektenliebe Terraleaf Brick
  • larger roots or spiderwood
  • Moss areas

A high substrate layer is important as the animals like to dig and create stable hiding places. At the same time, a thick layer of foliage provides a more natural microclimate.

Substrate and microclimate

A mixture of is particularly suitable for keeping:

  • Tarantula substrate
  • Desert sand as a loamy substrate
  • Foliage

This keeps the substrate loose, diggable and slightly moist at the same time.

A permanently swampy environment should be avoided. Instead, a slightly damp area in combination with drier zones works much better. This allows the animals to select suitable areas themselves.

Climate and care

For successful keeping, you should adhere to the following values:

  • Temperature: 22-26 °C
  • Humidity: 70-80 %

Light, regular spraying is usually sufficient to keep the microclimate stable. At the same time, the terrarium should be well ventilated so that there is no stagnant damp air.

A water bowl should be offered permanently and is used regularly, especially at night.

With a GLORIA fine sprayer can be used to regulate the humidity particularly finely.

Feeding

Pamphobeteus spec. “Mascara” has a strong appetite and reliably accepts a wide variety of food animals:

  • Chocolate cockroaches
  • Argentine forest cockroaches
  • Cricket
  • Locusts

Adult animals also cope with larger food animals without any problems. However, uneaten animals should be removed, especially during the moulting phase.

Growth and development

Like many large South American tarantulas, the Pamphobeteus spec. “Mascara” comparatively quickly. Young animals in particular often show active feeding behavior and quickly develop their typical strong body shape.

Females reach a significantly higher age than males and develop more and more presence in the terrarium with increasing size.

Important points on posture

  • Diggable substrate important
  • Structurally rich furnishings recommended
  • Slightly humid microclimate ideal
  • Calm but very powerful manner
  • Large terrariums bring out the behavior better

Suitable accessories for your setup

We recommend a stable and natural setup:

  • Forest humus – Diggable substrate
  • Cork tubes – ideal hiding places
  • Spiderwood – natural structure
  • Insektenliebe Terraleaf-Brick – supports the microclimate
  • GLORIA fine sprayer – Controlled humidity
  • Tarantula & Scorpion Terrarium Complete Set assembled complete set
  • Repto Terra Sky – ideal terrarium for larger species
  • Argentine cockroaches – suitable food animals

This creates a calm and at the same time very natural-looking setup in which the animals can display their full behavior.

Conclusion

Pamphobeteus spec. “Mascara” is one of the tarantulas that do not attract attention through extreme aggression or hectic behavior, but through pure presence.

The massive body shape, calm behavior and strength of this species make it a real highlight for anyone who loves large South American tarantulas.
