Grammostola pulchripes – The popular golden-kneed tarantula
Grammostola pulchripes is one of the best known and most popular tarantulas in the terrarium hobby. The species originates from Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina and lives there in open grasslands and lightly overgrown savannahs. Thanks to its calm nature and striking coloration, it has become a real classic in the terrarium.
Particularly characteristic are the golden yellow stripes on the knee jointswhich form a nice contrast to the dark body. This striking pattern has also given the species its well-known name Golden-kneed tarantula brought in. The body itself is dark brown to black in color and appears very strong due to the dense hair.
The animals reach a body length of about 7-8 cm and have an impressive leg span. Despite their size, the spiders usually move calmly and leisurely.
Suitable for keeping is a floor terrariumas this species lives mainly on the ground. A terrarium from about 30 × 30 × 30 cm offers sufficient space for an adult animal. Important is a a sufficiently high layer of substrateso that the spider can dig or create a hiding place.
