Armadillidium granulatum “Soft Orange” – Warm colors for your bioactive setup

Armadillidium granulatum “Soft Orange” is a particularly attractive color form of the well-known woodlouse Armadillidium granulatum. The animals originally come from the Mediterranean regionwhere they live in warm and rather dry regions. Their warm, orange-colored markings make them one of the more conspicuous isopod species in the terrarium hobby.

The basic coloration of this color variant shows a soft orange to beigewhich is accompanied by lighter segment edges. This creates a very harmonious appearance that is clearly different from the wild-colored form. The animals are therefore particularly decorative and add color to any isopod terrarium.

With a size of approx. 2.0 to 2.5 cm counts Armadillidium granulatum “Soft Orange” belongs to the medium-sized woodlice species. Like all woodlice of the genus Armadillidium in case of danger the animals can roll up into a closed ball in case of dangerwhich offers them additional protection.

Suitable for keeping isopods isopod terrarium or a larger plastic box with sufficient ventilation. A container from about 5 liters volume may be sufficient for a small breeding group. It is important to provide a varied setup with leaves, white rotten wood, moss and pieces of barkso that the animals have enough places to hide.

A suitable substrate is nutrient-rich substrate from forest humus, leaves and wood components. A thick Leaf layer on the substrate is particularly important as it serves both as food and protection.

They are best kept at temperatures between 20 and 26 °C. The terrarium should not permanently too moist be. An area with slightly damp moss and a rather dry part of the ground is ideal. This allows the animals to choose the right place for themselves.

Like many isopod species Armadillidium granulatum “Soft Orange” a source of calcium for building up the shell. Cuttlefish shells or crushed eggshells are particularly suitable for this.
