Theraphosa stirmi – Giant of the tarantula world

The Theraphosa stirmiknown as the Burgundy Goliath tarantula, is one of the largest tarantulas in the world. With a body length of up to 12 cm and a wingspan of over 25 cm, it is a real sight to behold. Its deep burgundy red color and massive legs make it an eye-catcher in any terrarium.

This impressive species originates from the warm and humid rainforests of South America. There it lives as a ground dweller in burrows it has dug itself. It also exhibits this behavior in the terrarium. A substrate that is suitable for burrowing is therefore essential. A substrate consisting of forest humus, coco humus and some desert sand – at least 15 cm high – is ideal.

A terrarium with a surface area of 50×40 cm or more offers them enough space. Temperatures between 24 and 28 °C and a constant humidity of 75-85 % are ideal. One corner may remain slightly damp, but waterlogging should be avoided. A well-placed water dish and targeted spraying ensure a stable microclimate.

Keeping this species is more suited to experienced owners. Not because it is aggressive – it is usually calm and not very shy. But its size, its high appetite and its requirements in terms of climate and furnishings make it more demanding than other species. It needs stable conditions, especially when moulting.

The stinging hairs of Theraphosa stirmi are particularly irritating. Skin contact should be avoided. Nevertheless, it is usually easy to observe, often sits outside its hiding place and shows off its impressive appearance. If you have space, patience and the right know-how, you will be rewarded with a unique spider.

Compared to the famous Theraphosa blondi is T. stirmi often more robust, easier to care for and more reliable when eating. Their calm nature and presence make them a highlight in terraristics. If you are looking for the extreme, you will find it – without any drama.
