The art of spinning in blue – Why Chilobrachys natanicharum is one of the most spectacular species

Chilobrachys natanicharum is one of the most spectacular tarantulas around. Its shimmering blue and intense funnel web behavior make it a real eye-catcher – and a species that has long since achieved cult status among experienced keepers. It originates from Thailand, where it lives in humid, tropical regions. A well thought-out setup is therefore very important.

This species requires a terrarium with high humidity and sufficient structure. It should be at least 30 × 30 × 30 cm for adult animals. Deep, burrowable substrate is particularly important – preferably 15 cm or more – as Chilobrachys natanicharum likes to build tunnels and funnel nets. A stable soil layer of forest humus, some desert sand and coco humus is ideal. The soil should always be slightly moist, but never wet. A layer of leaves or moss helps to stabilize the climate. Good aeration and sea almond leaves prevent mold growth.

This species is often shy but quick in its behavior. It likes to hide in its tubes during the day, but is active at dusk and at night. If it is disturbed, it can retreat at lightning speed – or defend itself clearly. It is therefore not ideal for beginners. Nevertheless, it can be observed regularly with the right setup, especially when building nets.

Feeding is uncomplicated: Crickets, cockroaches or crickets are reliably accepted. Young animals grow quickly and moult regularly under good conditions. Even sub-adult animals already show the typical blue coloration. This is impressively intense, especially after moulting. Later, the blue may darken slightly with increasing age – but always remains striking.

Chilobrachys natanicharum is an impressive animal that impresses with its color and activity. Anyone who has experience with fast, burrowing species and can provide a warm, humid climate will find it a fascinating terrarium animal. With patience and good care, it rewards its keepers with unique insights into the behavior of tropical funnel web spiders.
