Active, lightning-fast, beautiful – Psalmopoeus irminia fascinates

Psalmopoeus irminia, also known as the “Venezuelan Sun Tiger”, is one of the most strikingly colored tarantulas in the New World. With its deep black base color and the bright orange flame patterns on its legs, it attracts everyone’s attention. This arboreal species originates from the tropical forests of Venezuela and prefers well-structured, vertical habitats. A terrarium from 30 × 30 × 40 cm is ideal, equipped with a cork tube, branches and a plant.

This species is fast, agile and sensitive. It has no stinging hairs, but relies on speed for defense or, if threatened, on its bite. Despite these characteristics, it is stable and easy to observe if kept in a respectful position. It is particularly active at dusk and at night, but with a bit of luck it can also be seen during the day – especially in a well-equipped tank.

The animals build webs in caves or tubes and often remain well hidden there. Temperatures around 25 °C during the day and a humidity of between 70 and 80 % are ideal. Good ventilation and slightly moist substrate are important – not too wet, but never completely dry either.

Psalmopoeus irminia is also uncomplicated to rear. The young grow up quickly and show their typical coloration early on. With the right setup, rest and regular feeding, the natural behavior of this species can be easily observed. Anyone looking for a conspicuous, fast and active tree tarantula will have a lot of fun with Psalmopoeus irminia.
