Phyllium giganteum – the walking leaf for young and old

Phyllium giganteumalso known as the “Large Shifting Leaf”, is a real feast for the eyes in the terrarium and fascinates not only experienced insect lovers, but also beginners and children. Their perfect camouflage as a dried or living leaf causes amazement every time you look into the terrarium – because you often only see them at second glance. These peaceful herbivores are not only pretty but also easy to keep, making them ideal for beginners in the world of terraristics.

Anyone who loves a naturally furnished show tank will love
Phyllium giganteum
appreciate. The animals are active at dusk and move slowly and gently – perfect for observing. What’s particularly nice is that children can also help care for them, as the animals do not bite, are not poisonous and can even be picked up with a little patience.

For species-appropriate keeping, we recommend a terrarium with a minimum size of 30 x 30 x 30 cm for a group of 5 animals. Larger is of course better – especially if you want to breed the animals. High humidity (60-80 %) and a temperature between 20-28 °Cideally with light daylight or a small LED terrarium light. A gauze lid or good ventilation ensures a balanced climate and prevents mold.

They are uncomplicated when it comes to food: They eat blackberry leaves, raspberry leaves or also oak and beech leaves. Fresh blackberry leaves are particularly popular – preferably in a water bottle with a absorbent cotton seal to keep them fresh for longer. In winter, you can use evergreen blackberry leaves at any time. It is important not to use sprayed plants!

The cultivation of
Phyllium giganteum
is possible with a little patience: the females lay eggs regularly, from which the first young hatch after a few months – given the right warmth and humidity. Initially, these need oak leaves and good humidity so that they can moult successfully. With sufficient food and patience, a new generation of these fascinating phasmids will gradually develop.

Phyllium giganteum
is not only an enrichment for any terrarium, but also offers children an exciting insight into nature – from leaf to living insect. Anyone who values quiet, beautiful and easy-care animals is well advised to keep this species.
