Vibrant leaf pattern for humid terrariums: Maranta leuconeura “Red Stripe

The Maranta leuconeura “Red Stripe”also known as the prayer plant, is a fascinating tropical plant that immediately catches the eye with its striking leaf patterns. Its dark green leaves are interspersed with bright red veins that look like delicate stripes and give the plant its name. The undersides of the leaves shimmer in a warm purple tone and create a harmonious play of colors – ideal for enlivening any terrarium.

The Maranta originates from the tropical rainforests of Brazil and is perfectly adapted to humid, warm environments. These characteristics make it an excellent choice for terrariums with high humidity in which tropical reptiles or invertebrates are also kept.

With a growth height of around 25 to 35 cm, the “Red Stripe” remains compact and is suitable for both smaller and larger terrariums. Its diurnal behavior is particularly characteristic: The leaves lower during the day and fold upright at night – an exciting spectacle that has earned the plant the nickname “prayer plant”.

For the Maranta to develop its full color and foliage potential, it requires a moderate to high light intensity of 800 to 1,200 lumens. Direct sunlight should be avoided as this can lead to leaf burns. A location with bright, indirect light is ideal.

The plant thrives best at a constant humidity of over 60 % and temperatures between 20 and 28 °C. Regular spraying and a loose, moist substrate promote healthy growth and bright colors.

With its intense patterning and vibrant play of colors, the Maranta leuconeura “Red Stripe” is not only a decorative enrichment, but also a natural humidifier that keeps the terrarium climate stable.
