Neoregelia rubrifolia- Tropical bromeliad for near-natural terrarium design

The Neoregelia rubrifolia is an attractive bromeliad that is ideal for the naturalistic design of terrariums. Its elongated, dark green leaves with intense reddish tones give it a particularly decorative appearance that is convincing in both tropical and subtropical habitats. This species adds color to the terrarium and at the same time creates an authentic rainforest atmosphere.

In its natural habitat, the humid rainforests of South America, the Neoregelia rubrifolia grows as a perching plant (epiphyte) on branches or trunks, but can also root in the substrate. It can therefore be used flexibly in the terrarium: it can be planted directly or attached in combination with cork or branches. Its dense leaf funnels collect water and thus not only provide a natural eye-catcher, but also a micro-drinker for small terrarium animals such as geckos, frogs or insects.

The plant prefers a light intensity of 1,000 to 2,000 lumens and develops its characteristic, bright red leaf coloration under sufficient lighting. If there is too little light, the green predominates, which is why good illumination is crucial.

So that the Neoregelia rubrifolia can develop optimally, it needs a humidity humidity of 60-80 %. Temperatures between 22 and 28 °C during the day and a slight drop at night create ideal conditions. It can tolerate a certain amount of fluctuation, but should not be permanently exposed to cool temperatures.

With a growth height of about 20 to 30 cm and a width of about 20 cm the plant remains compact and is therefore also perfect for smaller rainforest terrariums. Thanks to its vibrant coloration and tropical appearance, it quickly becomes the central design element in the terrarium.
