Big fruit fly “Big” – The XXL snack for small predators

The large fruit fly “Big” is a selective breeding form of the well-known Drosophila hydei and offers a small but nice upgrade: with around 0.5 millimetres more body length than the standard form, it is a particularly attractive food insect for many terrarium animals. Despite its name, this variant also remains flightless, which makes it easier to handle and enables targeted feeding.

Especially animals that are in an intermediate phase between juvenile and adult stage benefit from the slightly larger prey. Medium-sized jumping spiders, mantids in advanced nymph stages or even small reptiles and amphibians are happy to accept the “Big” fruit fly. Due to its increased body mass, it offers more nutritional value than its smaller relatives without being too large or cumbersome.

The large fruit fly also impresses in breeding with its typical fruit fly robustness. In classic breeding approaches with fruit fly mash, wood wool and good ventilation, a stable population quickly develops that can be used for several weeks. The animals are active, move around a lot and thus stimulate the hunting instinct of the terrarium inhabitants.

The “Big” fruit fly is therefore more than just a larger version – it is a well thought-out food alternative for all those who want to offer their protégés something more.
