Cubaris spec. “White Angel” – the brilliant white rarity among Isopods

Cubaris spec. “White Angel” is an exceptionally beautiful species of isopod that immediately catches the eye with its pure white, almost pearly carapace. The immaculate white, which has a slight sheen depending on the incidence of light, gives this species an almost noble and mystical character. Its coloration is particularly impressive in a darker substrate or among green moss.

It probably originates from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, where it lives in moist, well-protected microhabitats. There they can be found under layers of leaves, in rotten wood or in rock crevices – always in places with high humidity and good ventilation. These conditions can easily be recreated in the terrarium: Temperatures between 22 and 26 °C, a constant humidity of around 75-85 % and a varied substrate are ideal.

The substrate should consist of nutrient-rich leaf humus, white rotten wood and a lime additive to ensure healthy shell formation. A clear wet/dry separation is important for this species – they independently find the right zone to be active or to withdraw. Moist retreats such as moss islands, pieces of cork or bark slabs are particularly popular.

In terms of behavior, the “White Angel” are rather sedate, but can often be seen in a calm environment, especially after spraying. They eat leaves, rotten wood, fish food, vegetables and other organic materials and are therefore valuable helpers in decomposing in the terrarium.

Reproduction is reliable under stable conditions. Females carry their young in the marsupium until they are independent. The white juveniles are still very delicate at first, but with each moult they develop the radiant sheen for which this species is so highly prized.

Cubaris spec. “White Angel” is a real highlight for every isopod collection – not only because of its beauty, but also because it fits wonderfully into bioactive setups and remains easy to care for as long as the husbandry parameters are right.
