Cubaris spec. “Pak Chong” – the exotic eye-catcher from Thailand

Cubaris spec. “Pak Chong” comes from the region of the same name in Thailand and impresses with its contrasting and unmistakable play of colors. The body is usually colored in a warm, dark base tone, which is accentuated by light segment edges and subtle patterns on the carapace. Depending on the light, this harmonious play of colors is sometimes subtle, sometimes striking – and makes this species a real gem for both collectors and lovers of bioactive setups.

In its natural environment, the “Pak Chong” Isopod lives in moist, well-protected microhabitats, often under layers of leaves, in rotten wood or in rock crevices. These conditions can be recreated well in the terrarium: Temperatures between 22 and 26 °C, a humidity of around 75-85 % and a structure-rich environment are ideal. A substrate of leaf humus, white rotten wood, moss and a lime additive is particularly important to promote healthy shell formation.

The species exhibits interesting behavior – it is not extremely shy, but also not constantly present. It usually becomes more active in the morning or evening hours, especially after spraying. A clear wet/dry separation in the terrarium is recommended so that the animals can individually choose their preferred micro-area. Moist retreat zones such as moss cushions, pieces of bark or cork tubes are often used.

Cubaris spec. “Pak Chong” is not a pure ground cover, but also likes to explore higher structures in the terrarium, which makes it particularly exciting to observe. It is also a valuable part of a functioning soil police force, as it decomposes dead plant material, leaves and wood and thus supports the biological balance.

Breeding is successful under suitable conditions. The females carry their offspring in a brood pouch until the young are independent. Young “Pak Chong” are usually somewhat lighter in color and develop the typical patterns and color demarcations that make this species so special with each moult.

Cubaris spec. “Pak Chong” is therefore not only a visual enrichment, but also a useful roommate in the terrarium – perfect for enthusiasts who value aesthetics and functionality.
