Therea regularis – The “domino insect” among cockroaches

Therea regularis is an exceptionally pretty and decorative cockroach species from India and Sri Lanka that stands out due to its high-contrast black and white patterns. Its striking pattern is strongly reminiscent of a domino pattern, which is why it is often referred to as the “domino cockroach”. Each cockroach has an individual arrangement of white spots, making each animal a small work of art from nature.

With a body length of around 2.5-3 cm, they are medium-sized cockroaches. Unlike many other species, they are not light-shy but can often be seen during the day – a clear advantage for anyone who likes to observe their pets. Their calm and rather cosy nature makes them an ideal choice for enthusiasts who value visual appearance and interesting behavior.

When kept, Theyrea regularis require temperatures of around 24-28 °C and an average humidity of around 60 %. A mixture of forest soil, leaves and some white rotten wood is suitable as substrate. The animals like to dig, but also often stay on the surface. A good layer of leaves and pieces of bark provide both cover and climbing areas.

They are fed a varied diet: fruit, vegetables, cockroach food and foliage are all part of the diet. A constant source of dry food and occasional protein food is important to promote good development.

Breeding is uncomplicated: The females lay their oothecae in the substrate, where the young develop after a few weeks. Under good conditions, breeding is steady but not explosive, which also makes them attractive for smaller breeding groups.

Therea regularis is not only an easy-care and peaceful terrarium animal, but also a real eye-catcher that will amaze even the most skeptical of cockroaches.
