Damon medius – The silent apparition from the darkness

Damon medius “flagellate spider”, an impressive member of the amblypygid family – also known in German as “Geißelspinne” or “whip spider” – is a fascinating animal from the arachnid order. With its flattened body, long, whip-like antennal legs and almost extraterrestrial appearance, this species never ceases to amaze. Although it may appear frightening at first glance, Damon medius is one of the most peaceful and sensitive terrarium inhabitants.

Damon medius “flagellate spider” originally comes from tropical Africa, where it prefers to live in caves, under bark or in crevices – wherever it is dark, warm and humid. Exactly these conditions should also be created in the terrarium: a constant temperature of 23-26 °C, high humidity of 75-85 % and a well-structured setup with cork back walls, crevices and vertical hiding places. These animals are extremely light-shy and nocturnal – they usually only leave their hiding places after dark.

Damon medius “flagellate spider” is a skillful ambush hunter that locates its prey – usually small insects – with its probing front legs and then snatches it with lightning speed using its grasping arms. Despite their impressive appearance, they are absolutely harmless: they have neither venom nor jaw claws with which they could harm humans. This is precisely what makes them ideal observation animals for interested keepers who, with a little patience, want to get involved with the behavior of these special animals.

A terrarium measuring at least 30 × 30 × 40 cm is recommended, larger is better if several animals are to be kept together – which is certainly possible if there is sufficient space and structure. The substrate can consist of moist humus or coconut fiber, but should be checked and cleaned regularly. High humidity is essential, so regular spraying is part of everyday life.

Damon medius “scourge spider” is not an animal for quick observation during the day, but those who encounter it calmly will be rewarded with unique insights into the life of one of the most mysterious arachnid species.
