Cubaris spec. “Jupiter” – Isopod with galactic play of colors

Cubaris spec. “Jupiter” is a real feast for the eyes among Isopods and impresses with a coloration reminiscent of the cloud bands of the planet of the same name. The animals show gentle transitions of beige, brown and gray tones, which are often interspersed with fine, cloud-like patterns. This elegant pattern makes them a highlight in any isopod collection.

When kept, “Jupiter” prefers warm temperatures between 22 and 26 °C and a high humidity of around 70-80 %. A well-structured terrarium with moss, pieces of bark, foliage and white rotten wood provides places of retreat and supports their well-being. Like many Cubaris species, they feel particularly at home in a damp corner, but also need dry areas to avoid moulting problems.

The substrate should consist of a loose mixture of forest soil, humus, leaves and lime to serve as both a habitat and a food source. They also like to eat vegetables, dried leaves and protein-rich food. A cuttlebone should not be missing as a source of calcium.

Cubaris spec. “Jupiter” is relatively active and can be easily observed with a little patience. Their calm, unhurried nature makes them ideal inhabitants for bioactive setups, where they also act as small “soil police” and utilize organic waste.

Breeding is possible under stable conditions, but requires patience, as Cubaris species produce offspring rather slowly. The young are initially paler in color and develop the characteristic pattern that makes them so special as they grow older.
