Vriesea splendens is a plant species from the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae). It is also known as the splendid Vriesea. Vriesea splendens is an attractive and easy-care bromeliad that is a real eye-catcher thanks to its striking bracts.

Vriesea splendens is native to the tropical regions of South America, particularly Brazil and Argentina. There it grows as an epiphyte (epiphyte plant) in the treetops of tropical rainforests at altitudes between 500 and 1500 meters above sea level.

It forms a rosette of lanceolate leaves that can reach a length of up to 50 cm. An inflorescence grows from the rosette, which can reach a height of up to one meter. The individual flowers are small and inconspicuous, but the bracts surrounding the inflorescence are very conspicuous and bright red in color.

Vriesea splendens prefers light to semi-shady locations and requires high humidity. It should be watered regularly, but waterlogging must be avoided. The plant can also be sprayed occasionally to increase the humidity.

Vriesea splendens is very suitable as a terrarium plant. It can create a tropical atmosphere in a terrarium and provide a special visual effect with its striking bracts and long inflorescence.

In order to successfully cultivate Vriesea splendens in a terrarium, the humidity should be between 70 and 85 % and the temperature between 15 and 27 °C. This means that the plant prefers relatively high humidity. The plant therefore prefers a relatively high humidity, which is usually already provided in a closed terrarium.
