Armadillidium frontirostre – Mediterranean beauty with a striking head shell
Armadillidium frontirostre is a fascinating isopod species from the warmer regions of southern Europe, particularly around the Mediterranean. The characteristic head area is particularly striking: the front part of the carapace appears slightly elongated and gives the species an unmistakable profile. In combination with the grey basic coloration, it blends in perfectly with Mediterranean landscapes.
Armadillidium frontirostre is robust in keeping as long as its specific needs are met. The species prefers temperatures between 20 and 26 °C and a moderate humidity of around 60-70 %. A clear dry/wet separation in the terrarium is important so that the animals can choose their preferred micro-area. A mixture of forest soil, leaf humus, added lime and some white rotten wood is suitable as a substrate. Hiding places made of bark, stones or pieces of cork are readily accepted.
Armadillidium frontirostre is relatively active and easy to observe, especially in the evening. Their food preferences are varied: foliage, vegetables, dried food and cuttlebone to harden their shells are all part of their diet. Due to their activity and appetite, they also contribute to the decomposition of organic materials in the terrarium and are therefore also suitable as part of a functioning soil police force in Mediterranean setups.
Breeding is reliable under suitable conditions. The young animals already resemble the adults in their markings, but are initially much lighter in color.
Armadillidium frontirostre combines visual distinctiveness, robust husbandry and useful function – a great choice for Isopod lovers as well as for keepers of Mediterranean bioactive terrariums.
