Wax maggotsThe larvae of the wax moth are a popular live food in terrariums and provide a nutritious supplement to the diet of many reptiles, amphibians and larger insects. These larvae are particularly known for their high fat content, which makes them an excellent source of energy. They are soft-skinned and therefore easy to digest, making them particularly suitable for younger and weaker animals.

Due to their high nutritional value and easy storage, wax maggots are often used as a food supplement, especially in the rearing phase of young animals that have an increased energy requirement. They are also an ideal attractant to encourage animals that are reluctant to eat. Their white color and wriggling behavior make wax maggots particularly attractive and awaken the animals’ hunting instinct.

Wax maggots are easy to handle as they can be kept for several weeks if stored in a cool place. They do not require special feeding as they have enough energy stored in their bodies to survive until they are used. However, they should be brought to room temperature before feeding to increase activity and aid digestion.

However, it should be noted that wax maggots should not be used as the sole source of food due to their high fat content. A balanced diet that also includes other foods is essential for the healthy development of terrarium animals.
