Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens – The color fireworks from Venezuela
Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens, better known as the Greenbottle Blue Tarantula, is one of the most colorful tarantula species in the terrarium hobby. With its bright blue legs, orange abdomen and metallic green carapace, it almost looks like it has been painted. This high-contrast color palette remains throughout its life and makes it an absolute eye-catcher – whether as a juvenile or adult female.
This species originally comes from the dry, bushy coastal regions of northern Venezuela, where it lives in self-dug or abandoned burrows. There it spins large, dense webs that serve both as shelter and as a hunting platform. This weaving behavior is also very pronounced in the terrarium, which makes it particularly exciting for observers.
A terrarium with minimum dimensions of around 30 × 30 × 30 cm is recommended for keeping them. The substrate can be kept relatively dry, but a diggable layer of sandy loam or coconut humus is still advisable. A climbing element, a shelter and sufficient areas for spinning promote their natural behavior. Temperatures of 24-28 °C during the day and a humidity of 50-60 % provide optimum conditions. A small water bowl should always be available.
Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens is considered to be moderately agile and can react quickly when disturbed, but is generally rather shy and reserved. As a New World species, it has stinging hairs that it can use when threatened. It is not only a visual highlight, but also an animal that is often seen in the terrarium due to its active spinning behavior.
It is uncomplicated in its diet: Crickets, crickets, cockroaches and other common food insects are readily accepted. Young animals can be fed smaller prey according to their size. With good care, a female of this species can live for over 12 years, while males generally live for a much shorter period.
This species combines breathtaking colors, exciting behavior and uncomplicated keeping – a real must-have for every tarantula lover who values a decorative and active animal.
