Easy to care for, long-lasting & beautiful – Brachypelma boehmei
Brachypelma boehmeithe Mexican red-legged tarantula, is one of the most striking species in the genus. Its bright orange carapace and brightly colored legs stand in stark contrast to the velvety black abdomen – a real eye-catcher in the terrarium. This coloration serves as a warning signal in nature: keep your distance.
This species, which originates from Mexico, lives on the ground, likes to burrow and can be seen frequently if kept in a species-appropriate environment. Adults can also be seen regularly during the day. This makes them particularly exciting for anyone who likes to observe them. Keeping them is uncomplicated. A terrarium with a base of at least 30 x 30 cm offers sufficient space. A loamy-humus mixture is suitable as a substrate, for example a mixture of forest humus and desert sand. It is important that the substrate is diggable and rises slightly towards the back. Half a cork tube as a hiding place, some moss and a water bowl that is always full are part of the basic equipment. This creates a stable microclimate with slightly increased humidity, which comes close to the natural habitat of this species.
Brachypelma boehmei likes it warm. In summer, the ideal temperatures are 25-30 °C, with a humidity of 50-65 %. In winter, temperatures may drop to 15 °C, which corresponds to the animals’ natural rhythm of life. During this phase, they usually withdraw, but remain healthy and active as long as they have a suitable place to retreat to.
Rearing spiderlings is easy. They require the same conditions as adults. Initially they are pale and translucent, but become more intensely colored with each moult. Growth is slow. Females reach their full size after six to nine years and can live up to 30 years. The body size is then around 6-7 cm. Males remain smaller and do not live nearly as long.
Despite its powerful appearance, Brachypelma boehmei is known for its calm behavior. It is one of the species that rarely sheds its stinging hairs and shows little aggression when kept well. Its hunting technique is effective and it reliably accepts food – ideal for owners with less experience.
If you are looking for a robust, long-lived and particularly beautiful tarantula, Brachypelma boehmei is the right choice. Its colorful appearance, even temperament and easy keeping make it a real classic among terrarium inhabitants.
