Cubaris murina – versatile Isopod for tropical terrariums

Cubaris murina is a small, extremely adaptable isopod species that is ideal for keeping in terrariums. Originally widespread in tropical and subtropical regions, this species has become a firm favorite among keepers and breeders thanks to its hardiness and uncomplicated care. The animals reach a body length of around 8-12 mm and have a subtle grey to beige coloration, which provides them with excellent camouflage in the substrate and under pieces of bark. Their rather inconspicuous appearance is offset by their interesting behavior – especially when they are actively searching for food or curl up into a hemisphere in case of danger.

Cubaris murina is particularly tolerant of different conditions, which makes it ideal for beginners and as a supplement in bioactive setups. They not only act as scavengers, but also as useful soil police by decomposing food scraps and dead plant parts. In this way, they contribute to the stability of the terrarium ecosystem. A mixture of moist and dry areas is suitable for the set-up, as the animals seek out retreats with higher humidity as well as dry zones. A substrate of leaf humus, white rotten wood and some moss creates the ideal conditions.

Reproduction is quick and reliable under suitable conditions. As Cubaris murina is not dependent on narrow special conditions, they harmonize well with many invertebrates and reptiles, as long as they do not have special hunting techniques for Isopods. Temperatures between 22 and 27 °C and moderate to high humidity ensure permanently active and healthy animals.

Whether as a pure breeding species or as a valuable addition to near-natural terrariums – Cubaris murina impresses with its robustness, usefulness and exciting, albeit discreet, behavior. If you take a closer look, you will see that even these small, inconspicuous Isopods are a fascinating addition to any terrarium.
