Perfect for rearing young animals

The small fruit fly “Ant” (Drosophila melanogaster) is a flightless breeding form that is ideal as a food animal for a variety of invertebrates, reptiles and amphibians. With its very small size, it is ideal for rearing young animals or for species with a particularly small prey spectrum, such as jumping spiders, young mantids, tiny geckos or small poison dart frogs.

The special feature of the “ant” breeding form is that it has no wings and instead moves by hopping. This unusual movement pattern encourages many animals to hunt and ensures active feeding behavior.

These fruit flies are extremely uncomplicated to keep. They can be easily propagated in commercially available breeding mixtures with nutrient-rich medium. At room temperature, it usually only takes 10-14 days for the eggs to hatch into adult, food-ready flies. This means that fresh and live food is available at all times.

Thanks to their wingless nature, the small “ant” fruit flies are very easy to handle and cannot simply fly away – a clear advantage when feeding in smaller containers or with fast hunters. Their lively and hopping behavior also creates a natural hunting situation that encourages your animals’ instincts.

Whether for rearing sensitive young animals or as a varied food source – the Small Fruit Fly “Ant” is a nutritious, easy to keep and extremely popular choice with many animals.
