Eublaberus distanti – The robust burrowing and climbing artist among cockroaches
Eublaberus distanti is an impressive cockroach species from Central and South America that is particularly valued in terraristics for its robustness and interesting behavior. With a body length of around 5-6 cm, they are medium-sized cockroaches, but look very impressive due to their strong stature and dark brown to black base color with lighter markings.
This species is best known for its burrowing behavior. In the wild, Eublaberus distanti lives in leaf litter and loose soil, where it hides during the day. A deep substrate of moist forest soil, leaves and some rotten wood should therefore be provided in the cage. They are extremely active and use both the ground area and climbing structures – a spacious, well-ventilated terrarium with bark, branches and hiding places is therefore recommended.
The keeping conditions are uncomplicated: Temperatures between 24-28 °C and a moderate humidity of 60-80 % are ideal. One side of the tank can be left a little drier to give the animals a choice.
Eublaberus distanti are omnivorous and not fussy. Fresh fruit, vegetables, foliage, fish food flakes or special cockroach food are readily accepted. They are very efficient at utilizing organic material and can therefore also be used as “soil police” in large terrariums with reptiles or amphibians.
Breeding is uncomplicated with this species. Females are viviparous, which means that they keep the ootheca (egg package) in their bodies until the young hatch. This means that the population can quickly become self-sustaining in a well-established tank.
With its robustness, lively activity and exciting social behavior, Eublaberus distanti is ideal for both beginners and experienced keepers.as well as for experienced keepersand easy-care species that is not only useful but also entertaining.
