Piloctenus haematostoma- The territorial spiders with the red fangs
Piloctenus haematostoma, also known as the “Red Fang Spider”, is an extremely fascinating species of spider that usually has a body length of around 3 cm. Its body is characterized by a predominantly beige base color, which is interspersed with dark and striking patterns. The striking red-colored fangs, which give it its characteristic name, are particularly striking.
What makes this spider species particularly remarkable is its unique hunting style. Piloctenus haematostoma is mainly nocturnal and moves skillfully on the ground to hunt its prey. They are characterized by extraordinary agility and are able to pursue and catch prey, including insects and other small invertebrates, extremely quickly.
Unlike some other spider species that rely on complex web structures, Piloctenus haematostoma does not build such webs. Instead, they prefer to hide in natural hiding places or behind bark. They also exhibit pronounced territorial behavior and defend their territory extremely aggressively against potential intruders.

A terrarium with generous dimensions of 30x30x30 cm is recommended for the successful keeping of this fascinating spider species. A constant humidity of around 70-80% should be guaranteed in this environment. The ideal food is cockroaches, grasshoppers or crickets, which should be offered at regular intervals of around two weeks. Keeping and observing Piloctenus haematostoma therefore offers an exciting insight into the behavior of this fascinating spider species.
